For over three decades, medical professionals have endorsed the DASH diet as a reliable approach to lowering high blood pressure. Consistent research has confirmed its positive effects on cardiovascular health. In addition to its heart benefits, there is growing interest in how the DASH eating pattern might support other areas of health. However, its influence on blood sugar control in individuals with type 2 diabetes has remained uncertain.
The DASH diet highlights the importance of consuming fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products. It promotes legume-based and lean protein sources while advising a reduction in foods high in saturated fats and added sugars.
A recent study introduced a modified version of DASH known as DASH4D, specifically designed to support blood glucose regulation. The changes include a stronger restriction on sugary treats and starchy items, such as white potatoes, to better cater to the needs of people with diabetes.
In the study, 89 adults with type 2 diabetes tested four different dietary plans over several weeks, switching diets every five weeks in random order. Two of these plans were based on the DASH4D modification, while the remaining two resembled the standard American diet.
Results showed that the modified DASH4D diet helped participants maintain their blood sugar levels within recommended limits for more time compared to the conventional diet. These outcomes suggest that the updated version of the DASH plan may offer meaningful support for managing blood glucose in adults with diabetes.
“The original DASH diet has been widely recommended to individuals with diabetes and other conditions for its blood pressure-lowering effects,” explained Dr. Elizabeth Selvin of Johns Hopkins University. “This study now provides strong evidence that it can also significantly enhance glucose control.”
