It's common for patients to experience anxiety before undergoing surgery. However, high stress levels can hinder the body's natural healing process. Increased stress can lead to more inflammation, which is the body's way of protecting itself during injury or illness. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to boost your health ahead of a surgical procedure. This proactive approach is known as prehabilitation. Recent research has found that tailored prehabilitation plans can lead to better outcomes after surgery.

The study observed 54 individuals, split into two separate groups. One group followed a general prehab routine, while the other received a customized plan. Both groups were educated on fitness, nutrition, and improving mental well-being. The group with the general program was supplied with an informational booklet. In contrast, the personalized group received individualized coaching, online fitness sessions, guided relaxation exercises, daily prompts, and meal guidance.

Participants in the personalized group experienced improved physical and emotional well-being after their surgeries. Only four out of 27 people in this group faced minor to serious complications. Several also showed a reduction in inflammation levels. On the other hand, eleven out of 27 in the standard program reported minor to serious post-surgical issues. While they did see some positive change in one area of physical health, they showed no noticeable gains in mental well-being or inflammation reduction.

“Think of prehab as a way to strengthen your body and mind before facing the significant challenge of surgery,” explains Dr. Brice Gaudillière of Stanford University. Being in better shape physically and mentally before surgery can lead to a smoother recovery.
