In the Headlines: Diamond Shruumz Chocolate Bars, Cones, and Gummies

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a cluster of illnesses potentially connected to Diamond Shruumz-brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies advertised as containing a proprietary mushroom blend. As of July 15, 2024, 69 cases have been reported across 28 states. Of these, 36 individuals required hospitalization, and one possible death has been reported since June 2024. Reported symptoms include seizures, confusion, irregular heart rhythms, and nausea. The precise cause of these health effects remains under active investigation.

Edible products infused with psychoactive substances, including cannabis or mushroom extracts, are becoming more widely available. Some mushroom-based items are promoted for wellness benefits or to produce general physical or mind-altering effects. However, user experiences can be unpredictable and vary greatly depending on factors such as the amount consumed, an individual’s personality and mood, expectations, and the surrounding environment (for example, whether a trained facilitator is present, lighting and music conditions, or whether the setting is indoors or outdoors). Additional influences include overall health status, the specific type of mushroom used, dosage, prior experience with similar substances, and simultaneous use of other drugs. Some individuals have described negative reactions, sometimes referred to as “bad trips,” characterized by intense fear, confusion, panic, elevated blood pressure and heart rate, headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, sleep disturbances, anxiety, paranoia, ongoing psychosis, and hallucinations.

There is also concern that certain products may contain ingredients not disclosed on the label. These could include illegal substances, adulterants, or harmful contaminants that are not approved for food use.

Although many edible items are marketed as being derived from natural sources, the term “natural” does not automatically guarantee safety. Products labeled this way may still include prescription medications or other undeclared ingredients, some of which could pose health risks.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the FDA, and America’s Poison Centers continue to track reports of illness submitted to poison control centers across the country. Anyone who suspects illness or adverse reactions after consuming Diamond Shruumz-brand products should contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.
